This is a very fine and really gorgeous handkerchief featuring Maltese cream coloured silk lace with a silk centre.   Maltese lace was developed during the mid-19th century when Lady Hamilton Chichester invited Genoese lacemakers to come to Malta and use traditional Maltese needlelace patterns to produce bobbin lace.  It measures 12” by 12 1/4” and is in very good condition - the lace is intact with no noted breaks and the only defects are a few small separations in the silk centre, noticeable only when inspecting the piece with a light behind it.  This is an exceptional hankie featuring a densely made silk yarn bobbin lace - lovely display piece!
